Yes - I have been feeling like this as well!
I'm not even sure if I want to be 'a programmer' at all - I want to use programming on a daily basis to do cool and interesting things, like make calculations, visualise interesting points, tell stories and make arguments, more in the way that an economist or journalist or physicist might do. And then I want to work for a non-profit, such as a think tank. (as I have done previously, just with some more actual skills to offer this time, beyond Excel!)
And then how do I meet other people with these interests? I know of communities of web developers trying to help non-profits, but not of people that are working directly on building the skills I'm interested in.
I'm aware that my dream job might not exist straight away, that it might be worth doing any sort of programming job for awhile to just get my skills up to scratch, but it would be nice to at least be veering in a relevant direction.
Any help appreciated!
