Hello everyone. I'm Slade and you can find me at @BigPlayReceiver
Umhmm...I'm football fan, but not a "put on a jersey, get drunk and yell at my TV" football fan.
At any rate, I've been obsessed with coding for about 3 months now; but I've wanted to dabble for 10-15 years.
I've worked in, around and with IT for my entire adult life and I'm an avid gamer, but I've never scratched below the surface with respect to coding/programming. There are several reasons why I've decided to begin pursuing a new career, and once I get my blog up-and-running, I'll happily share that all with the world . To put it shortly, there's no turning back, I'm all-in to win.
Currently, I'm knee-deep in Treehouse and their Front End Web Development track...50 hours left to go! I like Treehouse's video-based approach because I can work along with the instructor (who is very good btw), rewind if I miss something, or pause and consult a book (Jon Duckett's are great for visual learners!) for reinforcement.
My ultimate 2015 goal is to position myself for partnering with not-for-profits on their web development efforts (whether via Free Code Camp or otherwise,) as well as tutoring and mentoring area youth in all things tech. I have a full-time job and a 2 1/2 hour round trip commute, but I've set a goal of at least 750 hours of learning and coding (together) for the year. It's doable. My family and friends will miss me, and I may not get much sun or sleep, but that's okay.
So I'm here to learn, help, motivate, support and ask dumb questions.
If any other newbie in the Baltimore area would like to connect and learn/partner just reach out.
-- vets making the transition to the civilian workforce. You women and men can do anything. Learning to code is laughable in comparison.
-- anyone juggling work, kids and the homefront while desperately trying to find one...just ONE hour a night to code and keep the dream alive;
-- those of us among the "slightly older" crowd as we wisely move to future-proof our resumes
