I thought I'd start off a discussion about your next side project! I've been thinking recently that one of the things that can be a bit daunting for new coders is, if you're lucky enough to have a project in mind, knowing what you need to learn in order to put it together.
Firstly, how does one go about designing an app? Well, what it looks like is a very good start. Me, I love pen and paper - or if you have a tablet/stylus that's good too. Sketching freehand is instant and fun - two minute sketches, even if you're not artistic. Screen layouts for traditional web apps, single-page web apps, mobile apps, whatever. Annotate and doodle in different colours if you like, but do it quickly. Iterate if you need to - if a button won't fit, draw it again until you're happy.
The next bit is choosing your technology. At some point you'll need to do this on your own, but on this board you can reach out to other devs. So, if you have an app in mind, but you're not sure what you need to learn, post it in this thread. It may overlap my experience (LAMP/web) and if so I'll advise. Tweet about it too, maybe the #codenewbie hashtag will attract help from the webosphere!
